It begins! Here’s what you can expect…

Website-starting thoughts!

Well, here we are! A “What Is Law Even” website, finally set up after two years.

The project began on Instagram, and I was privileged to score pretty good traction on it within my school. But it grew beyond that: reaching people from other law schools, both locally and abroad, then reaching people who weren’t law students. A year in, I started making videos on both YouTube and Instagram, and that’s when things took off again. All this has humbled me immensely, though I reserve the right to say that my digital art skills have improved significantly since two years ago.

Think the logos show it all. Kudos to those who get the reference in the first one (hint: nerdy legal decision involving a spear murder).

Anyway—someone asked me about why I decided to build a Squarespace website when the Instagram and YouTube accounts already exist (it is very tedious, I can tell you that). The short answer is SEO. If you’re not sure what that means, the idea is that you can make your website show up better in search engines. My experience with Squarespace is that their SEO tools are great, so here we are (thanks, Square team!).

At the core, I really do want this content to reach as many people as possible—I sincerely believe that people need to know the law, and that it is possible to explain the law simply. In our present age, SEO is the tool that ensures that. I have no plans to monetise my content; if you scroll down to the footer, you can see that all my stuff is publicly available on CC-BY-NC terms (non-commercial, with attribution). My hope is that many more people may have the law tamed for them, so it isn’t as scary, and it doesn’t feel as arbitrary.

What you can expect from this blog

But there’s another reason why I decided to build this site: the Blog feature. Moving forward, you can expect this blog to be mostly-filled with simple text explanations of legal concepts, and accompanying explanations to some of my illustrations and videos.

There are times when I get ideas regarding simple explanations to certain legal concepts. The first port of call for me is to try to explain these visually—in a video, or an illustration. But these illustrations take quite a bit of time to do, and in other times I realise that a text explanation would be better, so the ideas end up stuck in the bank for a really long time. Now, I have an SEO-optimised way of easily putting text explanations out.

Additionally, pretty much every video or illustration I make is stripped down to its bare bones. This is always my goal; to strip down every legal concept to its bare minimum and make sure its core intuition gets communicated. But there are almost always extra legal technicalities that I would like to include if I could. So with every new video or illustration I make, you can expect some short thoughts discussing the legal technicalities which I’ve left out.

If you would like to remain updated for these blog posts, you can sign up for the mailing list by scrolling down to the footer on any page on this website!

Thank you!

With that all said, I’d just like to thank you for reading this far down, and thank you for supporting my mission. I hope my content has been useful to you, and I’m always open to requests and feedback (just head to the “Ask Me Law Stuff” tab).

Take care, and much cheers!
